What is a needle lavage?

Needle lavage, also known as arthroscopic lavage, is a minimally invasive procedure for cleaning the shoulder joint. A camera and special instruments are inserted into the joint through small punctures in the skin in order to remove dirt particles, inflammation or calcifications.

For calcified shoulders, needle lavage can help to relieve pain and mobility restrictions by removing the calcifications in the shoulder joint. The technique can also be combined with other procedures such as acoustic shock wave therapy to achieve better results.
We regularly carry out microinvasive, ultrasound-guided therapy for calcified shoulders, particularly in the case of larger calcium deposits or stubborn processes.

Needle lavage can be performed safely and easily using modern, high-resolution ultrasound equipment. The “live video” of the ultrasound device (without radiation exposure for you as the patient and the treating physicians) provides a permanent and three-dimensional representation of the needle position in relation to the calcium and the other soft tissue structures (tendon, bursa).

The advantage of needle lavage is that the calcium, as a mechanical disruptive factor and trigger of inflammation, is not only crushed but removed directly from the tendon. Ultrasound-guided needle lavage often means that surgery can be avoided. Instead, the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia so that you can leave our practice immediately afterwards. The arm can be used immediately after calcium removal. In total, it takes around six to eight weeks for the symptoms to subside completely.

Needle lavage Regensburg: What is the course?

The good prospects of success with minimal risk have led to Regensburg needle lavage becoming our gold standard for conservative treatment-resistant courses of calcific shoulder. Just a few days after the procedure, more than 50% of patients are virtually pain-free. Studies have shown good to very good results in a large number of cases. This means that the treatment of calcific shoulder is similar to surgery in terms of success, but offers significantly lower surgical and anesthetic risks. These results are consistent with our needle lavage experience with previous treatments.
So the only question that remains is: How do you pay for the needle lavage? The cost of the treatment is billed via the German Medical Fee Schedule (GOÄ) and usually amounts to around €250. As no follow-up treatments are usually necessary, it is a good and inexpensive treatment method.

What is the difference to other treatments?

  • Smaller calcium deposits in the tendon can be treated with extracorporeal shock wave therapy can be treated.
  • In comparison, there is a slightly higher risk with needle lavage, as this is a surgical procedure, albeit a very minor one.
  • However, at the end of the therapy, the calcium is actually removed – shock wave therapy merely stimulates the body’s own subsequent removal.
  • Compared to shoulder arthroscopy, which involves a more extensive procedure and anesthesia, needle lavage involves lower surgical risks. According to current studies, the results are absolutely comparable.

Needle lavage at OTC | REGENSBURG - Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Yes, calcific shoulder can recur in some cases, even after successful treatment. The likelihood of recurrence can be minimized by regular conservative treatment, including physiotherapy, stretching exercises and pain medication, as well as avoiding overuse and injury to the shoulder. A healthy diet and sufficient exercise can also help to reduce the likelihood of recalcification.
If a calcified shoulder is not treated, the symptoms may worsen and the pain may increase. The calcifications can become larger and possibly become lodged in the joint, which can lead to stiffening of the shoulder. It is important to recognize and treat a calcified shoulder at an early stage in order to avoid worsening symptoms and possible complications. The Regensburg needle lavage is a good option for this.
