Shockwave therapy in Regensburg
Chronic pain in the heel, shoulder or elbow that does not subside despite physiotherapy and insoles? Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) can help: Short, powerful sound waves stimulate the body’s own regeneration of the affected tissue from the outside.
At OTC Regensburg, we offer focused and radial shock wave therapy with modern devices that have been specially developed for orthopaedic applications. Private patients, BG patients and self-pay patients receive short-term appointments via Doctolib.
When is shock wave therapy an option?
We use shock wave therapy when conservative initial measures such as physiotherapy, insoles, painkillers or weight-bearing adjustments have not brought lasting relief. Before each treatment, we carry out a thorough diagnosis to determine the cause of your pain.
Typical areas of application:
- Heel pain with plantar fasciitis
- Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
- Calcified shoulder (tendinosis calcarea)
- Achilles tendon complaints and Achillodynia
- Bursitis of the hip of the hip (bursitis trochanterica)
- Bone edema and delayed fracture healing
The goal: to return to everyday life, work and sport without surgery.
Focused and radial shock wave therapy
Our center has both options to customize the depth of treatment.
Focused ESWT
High-energy waves are focused on deeper structures. Suitable for bone oedema, pseudarthrosis and chronic tendon attachment problems.
Radial ESWT
Wider, more superficial distribution of energy. Ideal for trigger points, muscular tension and superficial soft tissue injuries.
We will decide which option makes sense for you based on your individual diagnosis.
How the treatment works
Preparation: Per ultrasound we precisely localize the treatment area. If there are already MRI findings are already available, we take these into account.
Implementation: One session takes about 15 minutes. The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis without anesthesia. During the treatment, we adjust the intensity based on your feedback.
After the treatment: Occasionally, patients report a slight pulling sensation in the treated area, which may last for a few days. No special aftercare is required. Most activities can be resumed immediately.
Important to know: The regenerative effect typically only unfolds 10 to 12 weeks after completion of the treatment series. Tissue needs time to heal.
Side effects and contraindications
Undesirable effects rarely occur. Temporary redness, slight pressure pain or minor hematomas at the treatment site are possible. Serious complications have not yet occurred at our center.
When shock wave therapy is not performed
- Treatment of near growth plates in children and adolescents
- Coagulation disorders or taking certain blood-thinning medication
- Acute infections in the target area
- Pregnancy
- Treatment near lung tissue, brain, nerves or malignant tumors
For questions about side effects on the hip or other regions, we will be happy to advise you personally.

Frequently asked questions
What is shock wave therapy?
In extracorporeal shock wave therapy, short, high-energy sound waves are directed at the affected tissue from the outside. These stimulate the body’s own healing processes for chronic tendon and bone complaints.
How long does a treatment session last?
Each session lasts about 15 minutes. The regenerative effect usually occurs 10 to 12 weeks after completion of the therapy.
What side effects are possible?
Side effects are rare. A slight pulling or feeling of pressure may occur in the short term. We have not observed any serious complications at our center.
Is the treatment covered by health insurance?
For private patients, the cost bearer usually covers the treatment. For patients with statutory health insurance, ESWT for heel pain is covered under certain conditions. For other indications, it is usually a self-pay service. Please contact us.
