Things to know before your visit
Before undergoing an MRI scan, you must remove all metal objects (including phones, watches, jewelry, glasses and credit cards) as the examination is carried out using a strong magnetic field. This also applies to piercings. Cartilage piercings, whose holes often grow over after just a few hours, can be replaced with plastic piercings for the duration of the MRI examination. These pose no danger during the examination and ensure that the body jewelry can be reinserted later. If you have metal implants such as joint prostheses or metal plates in your body, this is generally not a problem. However, it is important that you inform your doctor of this before the examination.
- Artificial heart valve
- Metal splinters
- Insulin pump
- Vascular supports
- Pacemaker
- Inner ear prosthesis
Before your MRI appointment at OTC | REGENSBURG, we will need the following documents from you, depending on the extent of your individual treatment history:
- Preliminary findings of medical examinations
- Surgery reports
- CDs of previous MRI, SPECT/CT, CT or X-ray examinations as well as the written findings of these examinations
- Certificates for implants (pacemakers, artificial joints, vascular prostheses, etc.)
- Allergy passport
- Laboratory values (creatinine) if the MRI is to be performed with contrast agent
What is an MRI?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), also known as magnetic resonance imaging, is a state-of-the-art diagnostic method that makes it possible to precisely identify diseases and develop targeted treatments. The MRI machine creates detailed cross-sectional images of the human body, which are analyzed by experts to develop a customized treatment plan. Unlike X-rays, MRI uses a strong magnetic field instead of radiation to create images.
Advantages of the MRI examination
- No X-rays: The MRI machine uses magnetic fields and radio waves, which makes it a very safe examination method with low risks to the body, especially for repeated examinations.
- Highest resolution: MRI imaging enables precise visualization of bones, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and other tissues.
- Non-invasive: This is a painless examination that does not require any surgical intervention.
- Versatility: The exam is ideal for diagnosing a variety of conditions, including neurological, muscular and skeletal problems.
Applications of MRI in Orthopedics
- Spine: Detection of herniated discs, vertebral fractures and degenerative diseases of the spine
- Joints: Diagnosis of injuries and diseases of the knee, shoulder, hip and other joints, including meniscus tears and osteoarthritis
- Muscles and tendons: Detailed illustration of muscle and tendon injuries such as strains, tears and inflammation
- Bones: Early detection of stress fractures, bone tumors and osteomyelitis
- Soft tissue: Examination of soft tissue injuries and inflammation, including bursitis and ligament injuries
How does an MRI examination work?
From the very first moment, we make sure that you feel comfortable during the MRI examination and are well informed about the procedure and progress. The usual course of the examination usually looks like this:
- Preparation and positioning: You will be placed on a couch that is pushed into the MRI machine. The device consists of a tunnel in which a strong magnetic field is generated. In rare cases, a contrast agent is administered to highlight certain structures.
- Keep calm: You will be asked to lie still while the images are being taken. This is the only way to achieve the highest image quality, which is essential for precise diagnostics. You will wear hearing protection to reduce the background noise during the examination.
- Duration: The MRI examination usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on the scope of the examination.
- Evaluation: The images are evaluated by our experts and a radiologist according to the dual control principle.
- Discussion: We discuss all the results with you and draw up an individual treatment plan.
